As Qiu Fu is about to bid farewell to the world of the living and, reluctantly, enter the Ghost City, he looks back on his life: How he became one of Sichuan Opera's best clown-role actors, and how he and his opera troupe struggeled to navigate through a world shattered by war, famine and politic turmoil from the 1920s onwards.
Based on the life of his own grandfather, director Qiu Jiongjiong weaves theater, fiction and historical references into a visually powerful epic about art, ideals and the collective memory of Chinese history.
